Support Stephenie

Postby emseacullen on Sat Aug 30, 2008 9:26 pm

What are people doing to support Stephenie?
I'm think i might write her a letter, i haven't figured out how i'm going to get it from england to new york yet but still....

I've been reading te arguments on the internet over MS. Wow! Some people are furious! I was shocked that there are fans attacking other fans beause they read the draft or criticised parts of her books. Others are saying SM is acting like a child for letting herself be defeated.

What do you think?

In my opinion who ever wants to read the draft can and should, Meyer posted it herself and it is totally up to them. People should be free to criticise, discuss and debate their opinions on books and any other work of art. Perhaps SM is making too much of a big deal about it, it does happen to other authors and they do not give up, but I understand how hard it must be for her to be betrayed by someone she trusted. I don't like fans attacking other fans, it's wrong, let people think what they want to and don't chastise them for it. Writing awful things about each other and the author is losing the plot(sorry about the pun). It seems like the whole fandom has declared some kind of virtual war on each other.

I read the draft when it was leaked because I was curious. I was hurt and disappointed with Breaking Dawn. If I had known it would be that bad I would rather have saved my money and just read reviews online. I'm sorry if you feel different, but every time I see the book on my shelf I feel such a pit of emptyness.

When I heard about the leak I was curous, as I've said. I hoped that BD was just a flop based on poor decisions and lack of editing. I know she can write better. I enjoyed the Twilight Trilogy and The Host. From the first chapter of Midnight Sun I was craving more. I got it. I have faith in SM once again. I loved the draft, and even though the illegal copy had pages in the wrong place and many spelling/grammar errors, it was beautifully written. I've read it again since it's been posted on SM's site. It makes up for the epic fail that was BD.

The fact that fans are turning against one another doesn't surprise me. Everyone has their own opinion and most people don't like it when one opinion does not agree with another. People get angry and just want someone else to understand. It happened with the Harry Potter community, as it happens to most communities. Look at Heroes. The fan backlash after season 2 made the writers go and aim for better quality for season 3.

Do I think that SM handled this wrong? Yes. I think the timing of this release is too convenient. Many people thing that she leaked MS on her own, though I doubt that. I do think that someone who had a copy saw how much of fandom hated BD and wanted to gain some positive press for SM. That was hit or miss though, since many fans still hate MS. But it has made us forget a bit about BD. It just came out really. We should be talking about it more. But we aren't. We're all focused on MS now.

I think SM handled it wrong when she put the leaked copy on her site. There were a few differences from the illegal copy, which means she posted a slightly different variation. The formatting is completely different, which added over 100 pages to the version SM has posted. Not of information. But of spacing. Way to make it seem longer. She did not have to succumb to the fans and whoever leaked it by posting it herself. Her statement could have just told us all not to read it. I think her saying that would dissaude people from reading the illegal MS.

I will never buy another book by SM again. I can't. I honestly don't want to take a gamble with money over something that I might hate intensely (like BD). I will read reviews and spoilers, to then see if I might spend a day in a bookstore reading one of her works, but I can never spend money on her again. I am so soured by everything this fandom and these books have done recently I'm even considering not seeing the movie. I can't get excited like I used to. Or like I still do over Harry Potter.

I'm sorry you feel that way about BD. I had my doubts at first too but i read it a second time - i wanted to know that it wasn't just shock that left me feeling dissapointed.
I don't know if you have already re-read it but if you haven't i think you should. I realised how great it was the second time around. It made me see how Stephenie had been weaving threads of the final story throughout the saga and they cleverly came together, it was so much better than i'd thought.
I am also unsure about the leak, was it intentional? It certainly works to her advantage in some ways. I went and read it and it left me wanting more of MS. I saw the articles about her in the newspapers and in England she is not so popular so the story must be everywhere in the U.S. at the moment.
I agree with your reaction to her statement. She shouldn't have given up so easily if someone was acting against her. Giving up dissapoints the fans still on side who feel they've been punished for something they didn't do. I hope MS is brought out.

I haven't read it a second time, but I might one day. I'm sorry for how rant-y my other post sounded, I just needed to get that all out.

I just got an idea for SM. In the 1800-1900s authors would sometimes publish a chapter a week and either place this in newspapers or sell them seperately for a penny. If she isn't planning to publish the novel (which none of us know) then she might be able to post a chapter every week/month or so until it's finished. I think this would be a cute way to end the book, since there's such a huge chunk already on her site.

Your idea is a good one but for me when i read the twilight books i like to read a lot of chapters at once to really get inside the characters head and lose myself in their world and i don't like waiting!
It kind of has started the way you suggested anyway since we already had the first chapter and then got the next six or whatever it was and probably we will get more chapters soon. I would really like to have a whole book in my possesion rather than parts each week.
If it meant reading it in parts or it never being published at all I'd definately be happy with reading each part.
I reckon that either before or during the time when the Twilight Movie is released we'll get some more info on Midnight Sun. I kind of think that this is what the spoiler controversy was all about.

i dont know why shes making suck a big deal about it. things get leaked over the internet all the time, just think of how much money the music industry looses thanks to illeagal downloading, but the artists we love dont stop makin music, they keep doing it cz thats what they love and they know that they have loyal fans who still but the cd, just to have the cd. if stephanie meyer really loved midnight sun, or us, her somewhat loyal fans(breaking dawn made me loose sone faith in her), she would continue to write midnight sun and publish it, even if she is afraid the sales will be horrible due to the leaking. but the sales wouldne be horrible, because people would buy it just to have it on their bookshelf and the ease of just picking it up to read it. idk i wear contacts and my eyes hurt after staring at the computer screen for a while. but i would deff buy midnight sun. and it would probably join twilight on my night table, because from what ive read online it seems like something i would pick up countless times to reread all my favorite parts. (like i do with twilight.) even though i do not read the other 3 nearly as much, i still love them... i think i got off topic... i ramble.

The more drastic the reaction is, the more publicity and controversy it creates. That's why SM made a big deal out of it; whether she wants publicity to win some of her fans back, to get more readers or (what she says she is doing) to draw attention to the importance of copyright laws and to show up the people who spoiled it.

yea idk id rather have midnight sun than breaking dawn. and i think alot of poeple would agree, twilight iss what made us love and what to lread the rest of the series, to me, mome of the others books even compare to it.

i want midnight sun. she should get over her hissy fit and just do it. it makes me mad. each day i check her website to see if anything new has happened about midnight sun, and each day im dissapointed. i just want that book!

Me too!
I love breaking dawn too though and would rather have it than midnight sun. Breaking Dawn is the final part, the ending whereas Midnight Sun is a repeat of what we already know. That doesn't make me less excited about it though, it's just i'd rather know what finally happens to Bella.
